Chapter 4. PATH TOOLS > Using the Brush Tool

Using the Brush Tool

Fireworks also has a Brush tool that lets you draw more freely, without worrying about how and where you place points. The Brush tool can also be used in the bitmap mode to paint images. (For more information on working in the bitmap mode see Chapter 13, "Working with Pixels.")

To draw with the Brush tool:

1.
Click the Brush tool in the Tools panel 26.

2.
Move the pointer to the Canvas area.

3.
Drag to create a path that follows the movements of the mouse 27.

Figure 27. The Brush allows you to draw freeform paths without placing anchor points.

4.
Release the mouse button to end the path.

Tip

To make a closed path with the Brush tool, move the mouse close to the starting point of the path.

Tip

Hold the Shift key to create straight lines with the Paintbrush.

The Paintbrush cursor shows the current size of the stroke width (see page 121). However, you can change the preferences to show the Paintbrush cursor as you draw.

To change the Paintbrush cursor:

1.
Choose Edit > Preferences.

2.
Choose Edit from the pop-up menu. This shows the Editing preferences 28.

Figure 28. Check Brush-Size Painting Cursors to see the size of the brush stroke.

3.
Deselect Brush-Size Painting Cursors. This displays the Paintbrush cursor 29 instead of the size and shape of the stroke width.
