Chapter 4. PATH TOOLS

Chapter 4. PATH TOOLS

Many of my students ask me which is better for them to know in order to learn Macromedia Fireworks: a bitmapped editing program such as Adobe Photoshop, or a vector illustration program such as Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia FreeHand. Without a doubt the answer is a vector program.

While Fireworks does offer image editing features in bitmap mode (see Chapter 13, "Working with Pixels"), there is added power from the fact that it uses vector containers to hold bitmap information. So, unlike pixel images that are difficult to change, the paths in Fireworks remain "always editable, all the time."

If you are familiar with a vector program, you will quickly pick up the principles here. If you have never used a vector program, pay attention to this chapter, because creating paths is the primary source of images in Fireworks.
