Chapter 15. OPTIMIZING > Setting Transparency

Setting Transparency

One of the main advantages of the GIF format is that certain areas of an image can be made transparent. This allows you to have a Web graphic that blends into the background of the page.

To create transparency in a GIF image:

1.
Choose GIF in the Optimize panel.

2.
Choose either Index Transparency or Alpha Transparency from the Transparency list 27.

Figure 27. The Transparency list lets you add transparency to GIF images.

Tip

See the following exercise to understand the difference between the two types of transparency settings.

3.
Use the Transparency Eyedropper 28 to click the color in the image that you want to make transparent. The transparent area is indicated with a checkerboard grid 29.

Figure 28. The Transparency Eyedropper lets you select which colors should be made transparent.

Figure 29. The Eyedropper allows you to select colors in the image that should be transparent.

4.
Use the Eyedropper with the plus (+) sign to select additional colors to make transparent.

5.
Use the Eyedropper with the minus (-) sign to deselect colors.

Tip

You can also select colors in the Color Table and click the Transparency icon to make those colors transparent.
