As a general rule, most people use JPEG for photos and GIF for flat-color artwork. But there are times when that rule does not apply.

For instance, if you have a photograph with very flat colors, such as a road sign on a white background, you may find that optimizing as a GIF allows you to keep the appearance of the flat colors 25.
