Chapter 11. MASKS AND INTERACTIONS > Applying and Discarding Masks

Applying and Discarding Masks

The beauty of a mask is that it hides objects without destroying any objects or pixels. There may come a time when you want to apply the mask to permanently change the appearance of the masked objects.

To apply a mask to its contents:

1.
Drag the Mask Thumbnail into the Delete icon of the Layers panel 32. A dialog box appears asking how you want to apply the mask.

Figure 32. Drag the Mask Thumbnail to apply or discard the mask.

2.
Choose Apply to delete those areas of the contents that were outside the boundaries of the mask. If the pixels of the underlying image had been altered in appearance by a grayscale mask, those pixels will be permanently changed.

Tip

If the mask contains vector objects, the dialog box will state that applying the mask will convert the objects into a bitmapped image. If you do not want a bitmapped image, do not apply the mask. Instead, remove the mask as an object and then use the Crop command as described on page 99.
