Chapter 11. MASKS AND INTERACTIONS > Bitmap or Grayscale Masks

Bitmap or Grayscale Masks

You can also use Fireworks objects to mask bitmap images. This lets you create a vignette or a non-rectangular shape around the scanned image. (For more information on working with scanned images, see Chapter 13, "Working with Pixels.")

To use objects to mask a scanned image:

1.
Choose Modify>Exit Bitmap Mode. This ensures that you are working with the image as an object, not as a bitmap image 14.

Figure 14. An object can also be used to mask a scanned image.

2.
Create the items you want to act as the mask.

Tip

Use the Feather command in the Fill panel to add a softer edge to the mask.

3.
Select the items and choose Edit>Cut.

4.
Use the Pointer tool to select the image.

5.
Choose Edit>Paste as Mask. The scanned image appears inside the mask 15.

Figure 15. The feathered edge of the mask makes the edge of the scanned image fade.
