Chapter 20. EXPORTING > Exporting as Flash SWF

Exporting as Flash SWF

You can export Fireworks images in the Macromedia Flash SWF format. This lets you convert animations created in Fireworks into SWF animations. The benefit of exporting as Flash SWF is that the SWF file can be uploaded to the Web or inserted into a Web page without opening Macromedia Flash. However, the exported files lose their link to the original Fireworks artwork.

Flash Replaces GIF?

Not too long ago, many companies would not use SWF animations in their Web pages. Too many people had to first download a plug-in to see the SWF animation.

However, a survey conducted in September of 2000 reports that 96.4% of all Web users can view SWF content without having to download and install a player.

Today, more and more Web sites are integrating SWF—either by inserting Flash buttons and animations or by creating entire sites using Flash.

My own feeling is that within a very short period of time, Flash animations will completely replace GIF animations-with good reason. A small size, five-frame GIF animation can take up 5k of file space. The same animation saved in the SWF format is less than 1k.
