Clipping Paths

The old art of cutting silhouettes out of paper is mostly gone now, though it lives on at street fairs and tourist spots. If you've ever seen someone cutting one of these, you know how painstaking a process it can be. We wonder why, then, people expect creating a silhouette in Photoshop to be as easy as snapping their fingers. Far from it: masking out the background of an image—leaving only the foreground object—is a difficult proposition. Unfortunately, it's something that many of us in production work have to do every day (see Figure 16-14).
