Chapter 5. Color Settings: Configuring P... > Applying Profiles Outside Color Sett...

Applying Profiles Outside Color Settings

The settings in the Color Settings dialog box represent the “fallback” position for performing color conversions. But two commands on the Mode submenu (under the Image menu) offer much more flexibility for applying profiles and performing conversions on an image-by-image basis. In fact, Bruce now finds he hardly ever converts colors (like from RGB to CMYK) using plain ol' Mode changes. The two new commands, Assign Profile and Convert to Profile, replace the Profile-to-Profile command in Photoshop 5, which we likened to a chainsaw without a safety guard (because it didn't keep track of profiles and more or less ensured that if you used it, your images would get saved with the wrong profiles embedded). With the new commands, the safety guard is firmly in place, and Photoshop tracks all your profiles properly.
