Changing Modes and Losing Information

We've stressed throughout this book that almost everything you do to an image in Photoshop throws away some information. But too many people, including some so-called experts, don't realize that changing to a different color mode throws away information faster than almost anything else. If you work with 16-bit-per-channel files, you have enough data to be able to afford the losses, though they still happen, but with 8-bit-per-channel files, every bit counts.
