Is That All There Is?

No matter how good a job you do of capturing the image, you'll almost certainly need to massage it some more using Photoshop's own tools. If your scanner has allowed you to capture the image as close as possible to the way you want it, the tweaks you make in Photoshop will be small and subtle, so you'll run far less risk of losing valuable image data, and introducing posterization and artifacts. Plus, you'll preserve the shadow and highlight detail that make the difference between a so-so image and one that leaps off the page and grabs you.
