Chapter 3. Layers Primer > Done Playing Around?

Done Playing Around?

You've spent hours toiling away on your image, and now you're ready to save your file so it can go on to its next stop (which might be a printing company or one of your clients, or perhaps it's going to be posted to the Web). Then again, maybe it's not going anywhere—you just want to rest your eyes, take a break, and work on it later. Wherever the image ends up, you need to make sure to save it in a format you can work with in Photoshop (complete with layers, paths, channels, and so on). Then you can save it in another format that's appropriate for its destination.

It would be wonderful if all software programs could work with the same format, but alas, they can't. Therefore, it's worth your while to get familiar with the various file formats available in Photoshop.
