Slicing

Slicing is a process by which an image is divided into distinct zones. One purpose of slicing is to divide up a large image to enable it to download faster. A group of small slices downloads more quickly than a single large image does. The browser assembles the slices into the overall image in sequence using HTML tables and frames.

Slices created using the Slice tool (next page) are called "user-slices," . Layer-based slices (page 437) automatically size themselves to include all visible pixels within a selected layer. Whether you create user-slices or layer-based slices, ImageReady generates "auto-slices" for the rest of the image. Auto-slices have gray labels.
