Indexed color

Some multimedia and video programs and some computer systems will not import a Photoshop image that contains more than 256 colors (8-bit color). By converting an image to Indexed Color mode, you can reduce the number of colors in its color table. (For industrial-strength optimization features, read our section on ImageReady.)

Note: Converting a multi-layer image to Indexed Color mode will cause its layers to be flattened. Use the Save As command to work on a copy of the image.
