Lesson 6. Photo Retouching > Adjusting lightness with the dodge tool

Adjusting lightness with the dodge tool

Next you'll use the dodge tool to lighten the highlights along the gondola's hull and exaggerate the reflection of the water there. The dodge tool is based on the traditional photographer's method of holding back light during an exposure to lighten an area of the image.

1.
Select the dodge tool ( ) hidden under the sponge tool ( ).

ImageReady also has a dodge tool hidden under the clone stamp tool ( ).

2.
In the tool options bar, choose Highlights from the Range menu, and enter 50 in the Exposure text box.

3.
Select a medium, feathered brush from the second row of the Brush pop-up palette.

4.
Drag the dodge tool back and forth over the gondola's hull to bring out its highlights.
