Chapter 6. Making Images Web-Ready > Web Safe Colors and Dithering

Web Safe Colors and Dithering

When using GIF images, you are limited to 256 colors. If you are creating images on a PC, you have one set of 256 colors. If you are creating on a Mac, you have another set of 256 colors. The two types of computers share only 216 of those 256 colors. Those colors have been used to create the “Web Safe” palette in Photoshop that you've been using. A reminder on how to get the Web Safe palette follows.

1.
Go to your color Swatches palette.

2.
If it's not showing, from the top menu bar select Window>Show Swatches.

3.
From the Swatches palette, use the triangle at the right side of the palette.

4.
Choose Web Safe Colors.aco (see Figure 6-23).
