Interlacing

An image can be downloaded by a Web browser one of two ways: It can come in one line at a time until the whole image is revealed; or it can be downloaded so that it all comes in at once, starting out a little fuzzy and then slowly sharpening. The second method can be done with the Interlacing option. Interlacing allows approximately every seventh line to show, and then the next seven. In other words, it shows lines 1, 7, 14, 21, 28, and so on, and then the next pass shows lines 2, 8, 15, 22, 29, and so on, until the image is complete. This gives the effect of venetian blinds when an image is coming in. Remember that when you are working with animated images, you don't want to save in this option for each individual cell. More on that later. This is an available option for GIF and PNG formats. JPEG has something similar called Progressive.
