Chapter 6. Making Images Web-Ready > Why Optimize Your Images?

Why Optimize Your Images?

Now that you've created some beautiful images, the next step is to put you through Web Image Training Camp. There are several things you need to consider before you turn your works of art into functional Web graphics. You need to make decisions on file format, color palette, optimization, transparency, interlacing, and animation. One of the file extensions you are now familiar with is PSD (Photoshop). Others that you may not know from the print world are PICT, TIFF (Tagged Image File Format), and EPS (Encapsulated PostScript). You need to learn about two more and we will acquaint you with both—you'll be singing their praises in no time. Your new friends' names are GIF and JPEG. Windows users may know JPEG as JPG. It's the same thing. But first, go to the book's Web site and download all the images for Chapter 6.
