Layer Basics

Photoshop lets you create layers in your images, which makes the job of creating complex, interesting images much, much easier. Layers act like clear sheets of plastic that lie on top of one another, each sheet having a picture on it. When you create a new document, Photoshop gives you a clean slate with a single background layer. You can tell how many layers you have, the names of your layers, what effects have been used, and whether an individual layer is visible or linked to another, all just by looking at the layers menu. You will be quite familiar with the Layers Palette by the time you master Photoshop. To find the Layers palette, go to the top menu bar and select Window/Show Layers. It will bring up the Layers palette (see Figure 2-3).
