Chapter 4. Filters and Effects > Four Types of Bevel and Emboss

Four Types of Bevel and Emboss

We'll show you how to use the Bevel and Emboss effects to add the illusion of depth to our image. There are five types of emboss, but only four are ones we consider really cool—Outer Bevel, Inner Bevel, Emboss, and Pillow Emboss. Each description is created the same so the text will look identical in some places. This is done this way in case you want to go to a particular type of bevel and start from scratch.

Outer Bevel

1.
Create a new layer.

2.
Select a color in the Swatches palette.

3.
Using the Type tool, write the words Outer Bevel.

4.
Double-click the text layer in the Layer palette.

5.
In the left column under Styles, click on the words Bevel and Emboss.

6.
In the center of the dialog box, the first pulldown menu says Style. Select Outer Bevel.

7.
Play with the settings to get a feel for it. Look at the words while you play.

8.
Click OK.

9.
You now have an Outer Bevel (see Figure 4-7). This works with text or images.
