Chapter 4. Filters and Effects > Creating Buttons with a Bevel

Creating Buttons with a Bevel

While doing Web sites, you may have the need to create a traditional beveled button though they are becoming passé. It's very simple. Here's how you do it. A bevel is an edge like on a glass window. It's an angled fancy edge that takes out the “flatness” of the image. It gives it some depth.

1.
Create a new document.

2.
Click on the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layer palette (see Figure 4-5).

3.
With the new layer selected, use the Marquee tool to create a rectangle of any size.

4.
With the selection made, choose a color from the color swatches.

5.
From the top menu select Edit>Fill>Foreground Color.

6.
You now have a colored rectangle.

7.
Double-click on the layer in the Layer palette.

8.
That will bring up the dialog box that you have become familiar with.

9.
Click on the words Bevel and Emboss (see Figure 4-6).

10.
Make sure Preview is checked under the “New Style” button.

11.
Look at the image and play with the Technique pulldown menu.

12.
Play with the Depth, Size, and Soften sliders as well until you get a beveled button that you like.
