Chapter 3. Altering Photos and Images > Lightening with the Dodge Tool

Lightening with the Dodge Tool

The celebrities' skin looks good, but there are some sunglasses lines under the eyes of the female supermodel (see Figure 3-13). I'm sure she'd rather not have those on a photo that goes around the world in your famously hip magazine. Let's lighten those up with the Dodge tool The Dodge tool is a member of a trio: Dodge, Burn and Sponge. Dodge lightens, Burn darkens, and Sponge either makes things more colorful or fades them. We'll just be looking at Dodge for this task. We'd only use the Burn tool to give him a black eye.

1.
Select the Dodge tool (see Figure 3-14).

Figure 3-14. The Dodge tool.

2.
Select a brush from the top Options menu.

3.
Since we don't want to completely erase her skin tone, we'll adjust the power of the Dodge tool. Go to the Option box in Photoshop and change the Exposure of the Dodge tool to 40%.

4.
Brush with quick, sure strokes over the red marks. Or just click over the color until it slowly goes away.

5.
Remember, you can delete steps in your History palette if you aren't happy with your work. You can back up and start over.

6.
You just saved your work, right?
