Chapter 9. Use a To-Do List > To-Do List How-To’s

To-Do List How-To’s

No blizzard of sticky notes, please. Why? If you have sticky notes, plus a computerized to-do list, plus another list on paper—not to mention a couple of piles of active papers—you have too many places to look. When this occurs, it is easy to just do the next thing that comes to mind rather than the most important. And worse, if you have been away from your desk for a while, you are probably going to check your e-mail and get sucked in again.

Jot your to-do list on a piece of paper that you carry with you at all times. If you are disciplined about immediately adding items to an electronic to-do list, that is fine, but most people end up reaching for a sticky note, and the task never gets transferred to the electronic format.
