Lack of Time

The third reason for not attacking paper pile-ups is probably the most common— lack of time. It is also the easiest to refute logically. When you tell yourself now that you do not have time to file this memo or that report, what you also are saying is that you will have the time later to hunt for it—probably through even higher and more disorganized piles of paper.

Do the math: The time it takes you today to file something properly (usually mere seconds) is always less than the time it takes you to search for it (a half hour, hour, or more). If you are still telling yourself you do not have time to file, start telling yourself instead that you do not have time not to file. The next section will help you get into filing mode to prevent those paper pile-ups.
