Chapter 33. Mind Over Machine

It is not uncommon nowadays to hear the media refer to technology as a “beast” that has to be “tamed.” For example, a tech report in USA Today (June 2000) read: “Engendering fear and sometimes loathing, technology has grown into an unwieldy beast.” And one tech-watch author, Jason Ohler, even titled his book, Taming the Beast: Choice and Control in the Electronic Jungle.

Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project, which conducts an ongoing examination of the effects of technology on our lives, uses less dramatic language to describe the problem: “Technology is relentless,” he says. “In the case of the average user, it seems as if there are new gizmos to master all the time.”
