Part IV: Managing Messaging Systems > Considering Instant and Unified Messaging

Chapter 25. Considering Instant and Unified Messaging

Messaging technologies are changing every day so it stands to reason that in the future you will need to adjust your message management strategies. Two technologies you might want to start with are instant messaging and unified messaging.

Instant messaging (IM) lets you see whether friends or co-workers are connected to the Internet and, if so, enables you to exchange messages with them in real time. IM differs from ordinary e-mail in that the message exchange is immediate (similar to a voice conversation, but using typing rather than speaking). Originally developed for personal interactions, it is being used more today to speed up business transactions.
