It is not surprising that millions of users feel buried under an avalanche of e-mail. This messaging system swept down the technology mountain so fast and furiously that few anticipated the impact it would have.

And what an impact. In 2001, according to International Data Corporation, more than 1.4 trillion e-mail messages were sent by North American businesses (up from 40 billion in 1995). Internet users received an average of more than 700 spam messages in 2001 (expected to climb to 1,500 by 2006). Workers spend from one to four hours a day handling their messages, 80% of which many consider a waste of time.
