Chapter 29. Developing an Effective File System > Maintaining Your File System

Maintaining Your File System

Just as important as setting up a filing system is maintaining it. Follow these tips:

File regularly. Thirty minutes twice a week will keep most filing under control.

Purge regularly. A simple way to keep files clean and orderly is to purge as you file. That is, when you are adding something new to a file, check quickly at the back—the oldest information—to see if any of it can be removed at this time.

Always put new items up front. Placing things in front means you will not have to search the entire file for a recent item.
