Preface

Preface

Managing an office is not an easy task. It requires a variety of skills and a lot of patience. For example:

  • You must be an effective planner, for both the short and long term.

  • You must take appropriate actions to ensure that your plans are met, and be flexible enough to change plans and actions, as necessary.

  • You must develop standards and controls that support the goals of your organization.

  • You must be a people-person, capable of putting together effective teams to get the job done. You need to know how to hire, train, evaluate, coach, and counsel employees.

  • You must lead effectively to get the results you need. This requires you to know how to manage and resolve conflict and negotiate solutions that result in win-win situations for everyone.

  • You have to make sure your customers are happy and that their needs are being met.

This book will help you do all of the above. It will teach you new skills or reinforce skills you already have. You will obtain the greatest benefits if you do the exercises in addition to reading the text. This book can also be used as a reference when situations arise that need special attention.

We wish you luck and good managing.

Marilyn Manning, Ph.D. Patricia Haddock
