Internet Access

The determining factor of connection speed is the way you access the Internet. Common telephone lines are the most widely-used, but they are also the slowest. Broadband residential connection is coming into more use and promises to greatly increase the speed of data transmission between your computer and the Internet. This broadband service comes from three sources:

  1. Companies that offer Digital Subscriber (DSL) service through existing phone lines. This service is typically eight times faster than most telephone line service. Unfortunately, this service is not yet available in all areas.

  2. Cable TV companies that offer cable-modem service. This service can be faster than DSL, but the speed decreases as more people in a given area go online. This may become the dominant service since cable TV is so widely available.

  3. Satellite TV companies that offer connections through their dishes. This service provides high-speed transmission for outgoing data but relies on existing telephone lines for incoming data.
