Pagers

These little gadgets that you clip on to your belt, carry in a pocket or purse, or wear on your wrist have been around for 40 years or so. But they have come a long way from the original model where a beep was a signal to call in. Today some models will store up to 10 numbers for you to call back. Others display brief messages. The most sophisticated systems link to satellites to contact you anywhere in the country. The number of pagers in use grew from 19.2 million at the end of 1993 to 33 million by 1997 and continues to grow each year.
