Chapter 7. Clearing Off the Stacks > Maintaining Your Organization

Maintaining Your Organization

Part 1:. Processing the “In Box”

Keeping the stacks of paper down can be challenging. Work assignments, projects and mail can all arrive when you are not prepared to work on it. Use the In Box as the single place for people to place new information. Processing new work from the In Box each day (or sometimes two or three times a day), should never take more than fifteen minutes. Processing means sorting, deciding and putting away the physical paper even when you have not completed the work the paper represents. You can put anything away when you can answer these three questions.

Three Key Questions

  1. What does this refer to?

  2. What is my next step?

  3. What would I decide if it was one week before vacation?
