WHAT IS JOB BURNOUT? > BURNOUT SYMPTOMS - Pg. 2

2 BURNOUT SYMPTOMS Following are the common symptoms of job burnout: NEGATIVE EMOTIONS: Occasional feelings of frustration, anger, depression, dissatisfaction and anxiety are normal parts of living and working. But people caught in the burnout cycle usually experience these negative emotions more and more often until they become chronic. Eventually, the person complains of emotional fatigue. INTERPERSONAL PROBLEMS: Feeling emotionally drained makes inter- acting with people on the job and at home more difficult. When inevitable conflicts arise, the burnout victim is likely to overreact with an emotional outburst or intense hostility. This makes communication with co-workers, friends and family increasingly difficult. The victim also tends to withdraw from social interactions. The tendency to withdraw is most pronounced among helping professionals who often become aloof and inaccessible to the very people they are expected to help.
