SKILL BUILDING: THE FOURTH PATH TO PERSO... > IDENTIFYING THE SKILL - Pg. 74

74 IDENTIFYING THE SKILL Clearly define the skill you want to teach yourself and set a goal for the skill level you want to achieve. Set a deadline. Remember to be positive in stating what you wish to learn, to describe the skill on the "doing level" and to create a compelling image of yourself having the skill. Determine a Small Step. Working backward from the goal, determine the small steps to your achieving the goals and having the skill. Make sure that the steps are small ones. Set yourself up to succeed by selecting the easiest step to begin with. Set an Objective. Set an objective for achieving the first small step. Remember to make the step small so that it will be easy for you to break your inertia. Require only what you can do easily with a small stretch. Give Yourself Wins. Create a Want List of things you want and activities you enjoy. Give yourself a reward from your Want List for succeeding in achieving your objective. Make sure to acknowledge your success with positive statements about your performance.
