71 SKILL BUILDING: THE FOURTH PATH TO PERSONAL POWER You can't predict what skills the future will demand. Job security depends upon knowing how to acquire needed skills. Each job skill or ability enlarges your horizons and personal power. You can do more and have more of what you want. Mastery, knowing how to do and doing it well, feels good. You like yourself more and get more recognition from others. With self-confidence, you approach difficult situations with an I-can-do attitude. It is a chance to exercise your "skill muscles." By contrast, when you lack needed skills others may claim you represent the Peter Principle because you appear to have reached your "level of incompetence." Without skills necessary to perform, it is difficult to win. Energy is devoted to avoiding negative situations rather than pursuing positive ones. Eventually you feel incompetent, incapable and helpless to change it.
