32 ACCOMPLISHING YOUR GOALS THROUGH SMALL STEPS The word "Inertia" means that a body at rest tends to stay at rest, while a body in motion tends to stay in motion. Imagine that your car has a dead battery and you must push it to get it started. The greatest effort to get the car moving is the first push. This is when you break the inertia and move the car from rest to motion. Once moving, it takes much less effort to keep the car moving. If you are like many people, you often have trouble getting started toward your goal. The problem is inertia. You are a body at rest! You must break the inertia to get moving. The secret to getting started is to take small steps. The secret to keeping momentum is to take small steps.
