51 STRESS REDUCTION TECHNIQUES There are several ways for a persoR to reduce your level of stress. These will be dis- cussed in the next few pages. They include learning how to breathe, recognizing tension, exercises to systematically relax muscles, and using your imagination. Breathing Correctly It seems crazy to explain the correct way to breathe because we tend to think it is something we do naturally. Yet, many people breathe shallowly so that too much air remains in their lungs. ~ Slow Deep Breathing Automatically Relaxes. Even a few minutes of deep breathing will produce noticeable changes in tension level. Deep breathing can be used any time and any place. Several deep breaths just before a difficult situation is calming and increases feelings of control. Learn How to Breathe. During inhalation the diaphragm contracts and descends.
