60 CHANGING YOUR ENVIRONMENT (continued) ~ Food Any kind of spicy or unusual food is stimulating, while bland and familiar foods like mashed potatoes or rice have the opposite effect. Cayenne pepper and ginseng are two natural stimulants. Milk and valerian tea are relaxants. ~. Level of Hunger A mild degree of hunger is stimulating. You may have noticed how drowsy you get after a large meal, especially in the afternoon. If you must give a speech and are nervous, bring your tension level down by drinking milk and eating pancakes, mashed potatoes, rice, or some other starchy bland food. If you must attend a boring meeting, skip lunch so you are slightly hungry- which is stimulating-and drink a cup of coffee beforehand.
