You learned earlier that chance is made up of an infinite number of unforeseeable happenings—both great and small—that are constantly taking place in the world around you. Chance events happen unexpectedly, without apparent human intervention or observable cause. These events cannot be planned, predicted, or prearranged.

With more and more people living in less and less space, and moving about more rapidly than ever, you are bound to experience more unpredictable encounters, more strange coincidences, and more fortuitous events. But the more unexpected chances you run into, the more opportunities you’ll have to be lucky.
