Chapter 11. Why People Don’t Plan > Fear of the Unknown

Fear of the Unknown

Roger nurtures an overriding desire for security and order and an intolerance for chaos. He’s deathly afraid of failure and the risks involved in an ambiguous and unknown future. He refuses to program his life around planning assumptions, because he sees no guarantee that those assumptions will turn out the way he wants them to. He’s so obsessed with surviving in the present that he can’t bring himself to prepare for the future. He avoids the chance of making a mistake by closely adhering to his time-tested operating routines.
