Chapter 5. “How can I Concentrate Despit... > Things You can Do to Concentrate Bet...

Things You can Do to Concentrate Better

THING 1. CLEAN OFF YOUR DESK. Sure you’ve heard this before, but do you know why it’s so important? Your attention is where your eyes are. If your desk is covered with phone messages, letters to be proofed and paperwork to be finished, then every time your eyes move even a fraction of an inch, you’re distracted. Instead of focusing on the project in front of you, you’re looking at that pink message slip and wondering what Joe wants to talk to you about, or you’re looking at that budget report and worrying when you’re going to have time to finish it. Realize how many times a day this happens, and you can see how important it is to make your desk a work place and not a storage place. A good rule of thumb is if you’re not going to use (or work on) something that day, it doesn’t need to be on your desk. One supervisor said, “I like a messy desk. I’m not a slob, I’m just organizationally challenged!” If you have an aversion to cleaning off your desk, at least help yourself concentrate on an important project by moving irrelevant papers aside (ideally behind you) so you won’t be visually tempted. The old saying “out of sight, out of mind” has literal significance for concentration.
