Chapter 12. REMEMBERING NAMES > Focus on the Person’s Face

Focus on the Person’s Face

It is important to look directly at the person you are meeting and make eye contact. This can be difficult for several of us because society has become depersonalized in many respects. In addition, some of us may feel that it’s impolite to look directly at another person’s face. However, the opposite is true. Most people appreciate it when we look at them. By making eye contact, they feel we are interested in them. They normally respond to this attention by sending it back to us. Paying attention indicates that we want to remember their name. This by itself increases the likelihood you will work to remember a person’s name.
