Chapter 12. REMEMBERING NAMES > First Impressions

First Impressions

What happens when you first meet a person? It is normal to go through a mental process deciding how well they came across. Most of us form an immediate positive or negative opinion. This is called a first impression. It is important to be aware of how first impressions influence our desire to remember, or not remember a person’s name.

One tip is to reshuffle your priorities at the time of the introduction. Do this by making a conscious effort to remember the name as a more important priority than letting first impressions block your ability to listen for the person’s name.
