Memory systems have been around for all of recorded history. Greek and Roman orators delivered lengthy speeches with unfailing accuracy. They learned these speeches, thought by thought, by applying a memory system technique of association and imagery.

Simonides (500 B.C.) is regarded as “father” of the art of trained memory. He saw memory training as an essential part of an orator’s equipment. Scraps of parchment dating back a thousand years before Simonides make mention of the importance of a trained memory, so memory training has been around a long time.
