Chapter 17. Causes of information overload > Ways to read information

Ways to read information

How you handle the information you receive largely determines how well you control paperwork. How you read the information you receive can either waste or save your time. There are three ways to read information: scan, read, or study.

Scan

Determine whether there is anything important in the document by scanning it. To scan, look for headings, captions, bold print, or any other indicators of subject matter. Scanning might be all you have to do before you file the paper or throw it away. Scanning also increases your reading speed and comprehension. The more you scan, the faster you’ll read and comprehend a document that really demands your attention.
