Chapter 17. Causes of information overload > Overcoming information overload

Overcoming information overload

If you find that you are already a victim of information overload, there are three major techniques you can use to get a handle on the information.

Give yourself permission not to know everything

Find out only what you really need to know. With the amount of information now available, it’s easy to waste time learning information you really do not need to know. Do not waste time on the Internet finding information that might be interesting but does not help you do your job. For example, you probably do not need to know what the temperature is in Belgium to do your job effectively. Also, realize you do not need to know everything to be perceived as a knowledgeable individual. Find out what you need to know, and know it well.
