The Procrastinator's Wake-Up Call 11 I built up such guilt over what I saw as my negligence that when it came time to bill the father, I couldn't bring myself to do so. A part of me knew that I had provided more than adequate service to the client, but the part of me I listened more closely to was saying that I didn't deserve to be paid. A few months went by after my last meeting with the client, and, as summer arrived, I began to fear that I would get a phone call from the father, berating me for leaving his jobless son in the lurch. I knew that the responsible thing to do was to initiate a call myself, either to the father, the son, or both, apologize for having been out of touch, and see how I could be of further help. But fear kept me from doing so. Then one day out of the blue, I did get a call from the father. Much to my surprise, he called to thank me and find out what he owed me. He said that his son had found my advice very useful and had found a summer job he was looking forward to starting in a few days. He said that he thought it must be about time that he received a bill and was worried that I might have already sent one that he'd overlooked. Talk about relief!
