A Crash Course in Getting Organized 101 Lateral file cabinets make it easy to find frequently referenced files and have a nice, wide surface that can double as a credenza. Vertical file cabinets are good for narrow spaces and files that aren't used often. File boxes, which are my preferred storage unit, are usually plastic, but they may be wooden or cardboard and can fit on a bookcase shelf as long as it's about 12 inches deep. File boxes hold hanging file folders and have handles or cut-outs on each end so that you can pick them up and put them on your desk or other work surface while you're using them.
