Red Flag 7: News Reports That Only Rely on Analysts Who Provide a Very Narrow View

Reporters who are dependent upon analysts from the big brokerages to help them analyze companies don’t have the same credibility as those who use a wider range of sources, such as independent research firms, money managers, consultants, former employees, advertising agencies, and so on. With Wall Street’s research far from ready to be given a clean bill of health, it is unfortunate that too many reporters remain overly reliant on big brokerage analysts. That dependence is likely to diminish, though, as an increasing number of brokerages are forbidding their analysts from talking to the media following the controversy over tainted research.
