About the Author

Martin Howell heads up Reuters equities news coverage for the Americas out of New York and is responsible for a team of more than 120 reporters in the United States, Canada, and Latin America. He has played a major role in directing Reuters coverage of the Enron collapse and the impact of the September 11 attacks on corporate America. Before that he was one of the editors in charge of the news agency’s U.S. corporate news coverage. Prior to joining Reuters, Howell, 42, worked for Bloomberg News, AP-Dow Jones, the Far Eastern Economic Review, and the Hong Kong Standard in the Far East. From 1980–1986 he worked for British provincial newspapers. Howell, who is British, was so desperate to become a reporter when he was 18 that he turned down the chance to study economics at the London School of Economics and instead went straight into the profession. He attended university later and has a diploma in Mandarin from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. He continues to work on improving his Chinese in his spare moments. He lives in Flushing, in the New York borough of Queens, and regularly visits Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, where his two daughters live. Chess, backgammon, cooking Asian food, and swimming are his current pursuits, though good coffee and conversation with friends and his kids are always his top preference.
